According to statistics released by the Korean Film Council, some 22.28 million people visited movie theaters last month, the highest for the month, raking in W190 billion in ticket sales, up 50.3 percent on-year (US$1=W1,129).
The record figure was mainly due to the explosive success of director Lee Byeong-heon-I's latest comedy "Extreme Job", which attracted 10.89 million moviegoers last month alone.
"Extreme Job" has become Korea's most successful comedy ever, drawing 16.25 million moviegoers as of Monday. The film benefited from the fact that there were few popular Hollywood films since Christmas last year.
The number of moviegoers for foreign films stood at a mere 5.05 million, while some 17.23 million saw domestic films, accounting for over 70 percent of the box-office market.
