Kang held a news conference at a Seoul hotel Friday and apologized to the Korean people for causing concern. He said for the time being, he will step down from broadcasting.

Kang said he will discuss with the producers of the many TV programs he is currently hosting to decide on the time of his departure that causes the least inconvenience.

He officially apologized in a media release after he was ordered to pay hundreds of millions of won in taxes by the National Tax Service for failing to declare all his taxable income.

But public furor is high and some online communities have begun collecting signatures to have the top comedian kicked out of broadcasting.
