In a recent interview held at the People Entertainment office to commemorate the conclusion of the tvN weekend drama "Filing for Love", he was asked about his preparation for the role of No Gi-joon.
Earlier, at the drama's production press conference, Gong Myung had previewed that he would show a more 'masculine image' in this project. When asked whether he felt he had achieved that goal, he said, "I am satisfied. I think I achieved it".
He continued, "At the beginning, the director and I talked about 'let's show Gong Myung's masculinity' before starting the project". He added that he believed the scenes that could strongly imprint that image included the shirtless scene and moments where his character directly expresses his feelings to the female lead.
As it was his first time playing an office worker role, he paid special attention to making his professional image look convincing. "I think this project allowed people to think, 'Gong Myung can pull off a masculine image well'," he said.
He also explained that he trained hard for the shirtless scene. "I felt a lot of pressure about the shirtless scene", he said with a sigh, drawing laughter on set.
However, his physical transformation was not only for that scene. He also focused on building a clean yet solid physique to suit his suit fit and overall masculine presence. Although it was a difficult process that made him sigh just thinking about it, he ultimately succeeded in delivering a look that appealed strongly to viewers.
He explained, "Since I mostly wear suits in the drama, I thought the shirt fit was very important, so I decided I really needed to build my body. At first, I just thought of getting a solid build, but then I realized there were shirtless scenes too, so I needed to reduce body fat as well. I worked very hard for it. I gained 5kg, then lost 3kg for the shirtless scene. I increased muscle mass and reduced body fat".
He later appeared on the YouTube content "Gym Jong Kook", saying, "At that time, I had gone through a happy period again and had regained about 5kg after cutting body fat". He added that Kim Jong-kook seemed to notice his change, saying he had definitely gotten bigger, and even commented more recently that he had grown a lot in the past year.
Meanwhile, Gong Myung played No Gi-joon, an elite member of Audit Team 3, in "Filing for Love", which concluded on May 31st.
