Gov't Mulling Cut in Screen Quota

The government is considering a cut in the domestic screen quota ahead of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Busan.

Deputy Finance and Economy Minister Park Byung-won told a news briefing Friday that his ministry is discussing with the Culture and Tourism Ministry on reducing the quota, citing the increased competitiveness of domestic films.

The Finance Ministry could also push for other complementary measures to boost the competitiveness of the domestic movie industry.

The screen quota requires cinemas nationwide to fill 40 percent of their schedules with domestic movies.

The United States wants the abolishment of the quota before beginning talks on a bilateral free trade agreement.
