[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Uncontrollably Fond" Episode 7
By Lisa Espinosa | Published on
Episode 7 of "Uncontrollably Fond" explored the romantic relationships in the drama: No Eul and Joon-yeong, Assemblyman Choi and his love for Joon-yeong's mother, Ji-tae and Jeong-eun. The malicious story elements like cancer, paparazzi, and meddling families were all present, but they took a back seat to relationship development.

Woo-bin shows off his male magnetism in this episode as his character struggles to hide his love from No Eul. He is a powerful romantic lead, and equally as powerful in the smaller moments: Joon-yeong's cancer pains; the phone interactions with his mother. Bae Suzy is also not half bad. She is continually a surprise. She lets herself be affected by Woo-bin's energy.
Lim Ju-hwan is the unfortunate actor with a wooden character as is Lim Ju-eun. Both actors are capable of great nuance, but both Ji-tae and Jeong-eun are completely vanilla characters incapable of taking much nuance. Their roles feel completely utilitarian and secondary to the main couple. The crackling romantic and sexual chemistry of Woo-bin and Bae Suzy completely flattens the mediocre scenes between Joo-hwan and Joo-eun.
As for the parents, Assemblyman Choi seems to have had (or continues to have) genuine feelings for Joon-yeong's mother. Too bad he is still married and his wife knows about it. This will definitely be a major point of contention and a point from which brambles of plot will grow and drag in Joon-yeong's mother, Joon-yeong, and everyone connected to him.
The first major kiss has happened, after which I expect some cute, and then some angst. We're preparing to launch into the second half of the drama, and since it's a melo, and Joon-yeong has cancer, I anticipate audiences needing tissues soon. Lots of them.
