[HanCinema's News] "12.12: The Day" Becomes Top-performing Film of the Year at the South Korean Box Office
By William Schwartz | Published on
After thirty-four days of availability at the South Korean box office, "12.12: The Day" has outdone "The Roundup: No Way Out" to become the most popular film of 2023. The news comes as "12.12: The Day" had only even broke ten ten million viewer mark on its thirty-third day of availability. Continued strong box office receipts of the late seventies military thriller came even as it faced tough competition from the sixteenth century naval war film "Noryang: Deadly Sea" in its opening weekend.

As of this writing, "12.12: The Day" has 10,735,036 admissions compared to 10,682,813 admissions for "The Roundup: No Way Out" as "12.12: The Day" now appears well-positioned to go as high as even eleven million admissions. "12.12: The Day" is the first film in the South Korean market since "Parasite" from 2019 to hit these numbers without being a franchise film. "12.12: The Day" fictionalizes the Coup d'état of December Twelfth and stars Hwang Jung-min and Jung Woo-sung in leading roles.
