[HanCinema's News] "Broker" Opens in First Place at South Korean Box Office

According to figures released by the Korean Film Council on June 9th, "Broker" is the early leader for the weekend. The Cannes Film Festival acclaimed social drama earned 146,220 admissions in its first day of availability on June 8th. This compares to 114,549 admissions for "The Roundup" in second place, with the action cop movie now entering into its fourth weekend. No other film foreign or domestic had more than 40,00 admissions.

The performance for "Broker" though modest is still a significant improvement over the typical South Korean film released this year. The South Korean film industry was widely considered to be in a slump before the astonishing performance of "The Roundup" which is now certain to break the ten million viewer mark over the next few days. "Broker" may yet at least be able to beat "The Roundup" for a full weekend, even if it currently seems unlikely to hit the heights of "Parasite" from 2019.
