[HanCinema's News] Cha Eun-woo Talks About "Island - Drama"
By William Schwartz | Published on
Idol turned actor Cha Eun-woo is set to reprise his role as Yo-han in the second part of "Island - Drama" on TVING that will premiere on the streaming platform this coming February 24th. Yo-han is notorious for being a hip priest, who likes K-Pop and wears noise-canceling headphones as he wears his exorcism clothes and gets to work. Though "Island - Drama" is adapted fro a comic, Cha Eun-woo claims he collaborated a great deal with director Bae Jong to create the character's vibe.

According to Cha Eun-woo, his character was very naturalistic. So whatever he did, had to be something that would also come naturally to Cha Eun-woo himself. Despite being a priest, Cha Eun-woo also has a villainous presence, as he chases a spirit played by Lee Da-hee who is under the protection of a character played by Kim Nam-gil, all under the backdrop of Jeju Island. Cha Eun-woo himself plays a complex character with a difficult past.
Cha Eun-woo himself is a hard worker, previously appearing as the lead in such projects as "Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung" and "True Beauty" although the feature film "Decibel" is the main immediately relevant experience, it being an action film. Cha Eun-woo was relieved that on-screen he looked relaxed in "Island - Drama" as he spent three months without rest preparing for the role, practing proper Italian and Latin pronunciation as well as the relevant choreography for his character.
Cha Eun-woo claimed that the more difficult the acting is, the more fun he has. But while he can enjoy understanding a character, grasping their proper expressions can still be difficult for him. Regarding Kim Nam-gil and Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo claimed to have learned a lot from his senior acting partners about how to approach his work. Cha Eun-woo also went into his character's own agony about finding out his brother had turned into a demon.
As Cha Eun-woo interprets the twist, despite being on a mission from God, Yo-han has trouble grasping what God was doing while such a horrible fate befell his brother. Cha Eun-woo also described crying during the initial script reading, thinking about having to kill his own brother in such a situation. Cha Eun-woo expressed gratitude that he was able to get director Bae Jong to cry during the filming of the scene in question.
