[HanCinema's News] Daejeon Confirms Scale of Investment in "Hijack 1971"

In a recent statement, the Daejeon Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency (DiCiA) confirmed that "Hijack 1971" was the first project of their 2024 Veterans Cultural Support Campaign. "Hijack 1971" stars Ha Jung-woo as a pilot, among other pilots, caught up in a real life historical hijacking incident. His performance was the impetus for the DiCiA's support, as the heroic character throws himself on a grenade in order to save others.

The DiCiA pledged around 400,000 dollars to three companies to produce content that spotlights veteran experiences. Purportedly, "Hijack 1971" received around 150,000 dollars of this support. Additionally, DiCiA studios were a central filming location for the movie. Out of 58 individual scenes that were filmed, 38 of them were filmed in Daejeon studios. This fulfills a secondary purpose of the program, to stimulate the local Daejeon economy.

However, the DiCiA's own statements only emphasized the value of "Hijack 1971" to the primary stated purpose of the program to raise awareness of veterans' affairs. "Hijack 1971" has earned 1,771,956 admissions at the South Korean box office. It became available to watch over South Korean VOD platforms this past July 29th.
