[HanCinema's News] "Escape" Hits Third Place on South Korean Box Office This Year

According to figures recently released by the Korean Film Council, "Escape" is now the third highest performing film at the South Korean box office this year. The action film earned 153,658 admissions on July 20th for a cumulative total of 1,770,369 admissions. These full day figures allowed "Escape" to narrowly overtake "Hijack 1971" on the all-time Korean box office this year, bumping the historical aviation crime film from third place to fourth place.

"Escape" was in its third weekend, compared to "Hijack 1971" being in its fifth weekend. Consequently, the more recent film has maintained marginally more weekend than the earlier one, though both fall far short of the ten million plus numbers posted by "Exhuma" and "The Roundup: Punishment" from earlier this year. "Escape" was released in South Korean theaters on July 3rd and stars Lee Je-hoon as a North Korean soldier seeking defection to South Korea.
