[HanCinema's News] Kim Eui-sung Talks About "Special Delivery"

Kim Eui-sung is currently appearing in the South Korean film "Special Delivery" which is currently screening in South Korean theaters. In a recent interview, the fifty-six year old actor gave some choice comments on his role in the vehicular action flick which stars Park So-dam in the leading role as an ace delivery driver. Kim Eui-sung's President Baek is an ambiguous character, straddling the line between sinister in his no-questions-asked job policy yet sincere in his concern for his employee.

Kim Eui-sung claimed that President Baek is actually among his lighter roles. More than his own part, Kim Eui-sung was intrigued by the premise of "Special Delivery" and how it revolved around a tough, hypercompetent heroine in a role which normally cast men. Kim Eui-sung was also interested because Park So-dam was attached to the project. The two had appeared together in hit exorcism film "The Priests" much earlier in her career.

Kim Eui-sung said he had some trouble with the fatherly instinct aspect of his character, as he has no children himself. However, Kim Eui-sung said he got along great with Park So-dam and thus was able to easily achieve an effective rapport with her. Kim Eui-sung also claimed to have talked with Park So-dam a lot about how their characters would regard each other, given the essentially business-like nature of their relationship.

According to Kim Eui-sung much of this is just his own personal process for getting into character. He claims to have had similar discussions. With "Train to Busan" child actress Kim Su-an was his chief target, while in "Assassination" the most discussion he had was with Ha Jung-woo. According to Kim Eui-sung, Ha Jung-woo had particular interest in this technique, asking Kim Eui-sung how his own character related to all of the other characters as well.

For Kim Eui-sung this is all important because for him, whether his character is good or bad is a matter of perspective, depending entirely on which other character he's interacting with. So this was how he came to settle on a natural interpersonal dynamic with Park So-dam. "Special Delivery" was released in South Korean theaters this past January 12th and has amassed over 300,000 box office admissions in that time.
