[HanCinema's News] "Rainbow Playground" Set to Go after Same Audience as "Extreme Job" and "Exit - Movie"

The best performing domestic releases in South Korea this year have all been comedies with a twist. In "Extreme Job" the twist was the absurd premise of police officers running a drug investigation operation out of a fried chicken restaurant. With "Parasite" the twist was layered inside the weird artistically styled class commentary. "Exit - Movie" was simply a disaster movie that put humor first. "Rainbow Playground" is primed for a similar market.

"Rainbow Playground" stars Oh Ji-ho in the leading role as a man who gets wrapped up in strange events involving a backwater community. The movie is being sold as an ensemble piece, with actors coming from an unusually wide variety of backgrounds - drama, film, variety show, and stage performers are all represented for the sake of creating an accurate, humorous mosaic of insular, difficult-to-explain South Korean culture - another hallmark of this year's three major successes today.
But probably the most critical factor working in favor of "Rainbow Playground" is that it will be premiering on October 9th - well after the Korean Thanksgiving holiday, but far earlier than the big holiday season. "Extreme Job" and "Parasite" achieved high admissions thanks to weak competition, while "Exit - Movie" failed to make ten million in part because competition was so strong. However, it remains to be seen whether "Rainbow Playground" will match the popularity of these other films.
