According to figures released by the Korean Film Council on August 12th, "Sinkhole" has had the highest opening day admissions of any South Korean film this year. The disaster film had 147,116 admissions on August 11th. This compares to 129,937 admissions for "The Medium" on July 14th, and 126,672 admissions for "Escape from Mogaidshu" on July 28th.

"Sinkhole" ranks third on the overall list of best opening day films for this year, behind Black Widow and F9. The movie's prospects for overtaking either of these films at the overall box office are murky. While "Escape from Mogadishu" will likely break the two million viewer mark, it had a positive viewer reception and a second weekend to improve its numbers. "Sinkhole" will be competing with "Hostage: Missing Celebrity" next week.
