The Ecumenical Jury of Cannes announced that "Broker" was their choice for best film of the festival. The Ecumenical Jury is made up of representatives from various Christian film organizations, and makes their selection for best film according to what they consider to most clearly touch the spiritual dimensions of human existence. The response to "Broker" has been comparatively lukewarm among more secular critics.

The subject matter of "Broker" and how it deals with abandoned babies may explain some of this reception. "Broker" is directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, the first Korean film from the famed Japanese director who won the Palme d'Or in 2018 for Shoplifters. Lead actor Song Kang-ho has also had a similar moment of glory, as he was also the leading actor in "Parasite" which won the Palme d'Or back in 2019. "Broker" will be released in South Korean theaters this coming June 8th.
