[HanCinema's News] South Korean Box Office in May Quintupled Compared to April

According to figures released by the Korean Film Council on June 16th, May was a banner month for the film market in South Korea. Overall, films earned 115 million dollars in May. This compares to only 23 million dollars for April. This is a slightly higher rate than the increase in viewers, which was 14.55 million viewers in May compared to 3.11 million viewers in April, with the difference owing to special screening formats such as IMAX seeing increased participation.

Most of the recovery was led by just two films- "The Roundup" with 56 million dollars and the latest Doctor Strange film with 48 million dollars, with other movies seeing negligible returns. The frontloaded nature of the recovery has left some skeptical as to its beneficial nature. However, "The Roundup" is at least a local success story. It's the first non-foreign film to break five million admissions since the start of the pandemic, and the first overall to break ten million admissions.
