The Cast
"My Roommate Is a Gumiho" boasts of an incredibly refreshing and dynamic cast. Actress Lee Hyeri, known for "Reply 1988", plays a college girl, Lee Dam; Jang Ki-yong, who recently appeared in the film "Sweet and Sour" plays Shin Woo-yeo, a 999 years old nine-tailed fox; Kang Han-na, known from "Start Up" plays Yang Hye-sun, former gumiho, now human; Kim Do-wan, known from "A Moment at Eighteen" and "Start Up" plays Do Jae-jin, Lee Dam's college friend.
A Comedic Romance
As described by Lee Hyeri herself in an interview, "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" is a comedic romance rather than being a romantic comedy. This would imply that the narrative is light-hearted and fun to watch rather than being heavy on the heart.
Adapted From a Webtoon
"My Roommate Is a Gumiho" is adapted from a webtoon of the same name that you can read on Webtoon. It is always fun to compare the original source material to the adaptation and spot the similarities and differences between the two. In addition, when you can't get enough of one, you can always turn to the other.
A Cohabitation Drama
K-Dramas about cohabitation / living together are some of the most interesting, humorous and entertaining ones of all time. That is perhaps also the reason why they're so popular! "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" combines a supernatural romance with the modern concept of cohabitation to give us a whole funfest!
A Healthy Relationship
Lee Dam and Shin Woo-yeo's relationship is based on the foundation of mutual respect and admiration first and foremost, rather than some twisted pull of fate or destiny. It is a simple and healthy relationship which will still give you butterflies in your stomach.
The "Age Gap"
Shin Woo-yeo is 999 years old and Lee Dam was born in 1999, making her 22 years old. With such a huge age gap, or rather, generation gap between the two, Lee Dam is always helping him adjust to the present whereas Shin Woo-yeo happily returns the favour by indulging her fascination for the past. If that's not a perfect couple, we don't know what is!
Lee Hyeri's Idiosyncrasies
Lee Hyeri is one of the most beloved Korean actresses in the industry because of her bright energy, optimism and lovely personality. She's adorable both on and off screen and her co-stars vouch for that. Lee Hyeri brings back her quirky yet sincere, playful yet honest personality back on screen with the character of Lee Dam and we can't help but laugh with and sometimes, at her.
A Foxy Friendship
One of the key highlights of the drama is undoubtedly the love-hate relationship between Shin Woo-yeo and Yang Hye-sun. Having been by each other's side for centuries, quite literally, they can't live with or without each other. The platonic chemistry between them is absolutely hilarious and we can't get enough of it!
The Second Lead Couple
Do Jae-jin is down on his luck when it comes to the romance and love department. He's always giving his all in his relationships and yet, keeps getting cheated on or dumped. Yang Hye-sun's heart hasn't fluttered romantically for someone in many many years. The relationship that develops between these two is the cutest to say the least!
Just the Right Amount of Drama
While "My Roommate Is a Gumiho" is predominantly a humorous drama about the romance of a supernatural being and a human, it does have its fair share of angst. As Shin Woo-yeo has quite literally witnessed the making of history and along the way, has loved and lost, he still holds the regret and heartbreak that came along with it. Naturally, he projects it onto Lee Dam. The story advances as and when he learns to overcome his trauma and embrace his new reality.
