KOCCA supports domestic CG companies at the AFM

South Korea's outstanding technology serves as a platform for entering the Hollywood film market

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister: Yu In-chon) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA, President & CEO Lee Jae-woong) are planning to promote the excellence of South Korean CG technology. To this end, they support the participation of domestic companies in the American Film Market (AFM) held in LA between Nov. 4 and 11. And visual effects (VFX) producers of Hollywood movies are invited to the AFM.

The AFM, established in 1981, is well-known as one of the top three film markets along with the Cannes International Film Festival and MIFED, the International film and multimedia market. It is a huge content market that represents a 5 trillion won transaction volume and is participated in by more than 7,000 producers, directors and distributors from over seventy countries. More than 1,000 projects are lined up and discussed, along with the advertisement of prior-investment.

The chances of South Korean CG companies gaining entry into the overseas market will be improved with their participation in the film market which is attended by seven outstanding CG production companies. They include EON Digital Films (CEO: Jung Sung-jin) that handled the effects for the South Korean movie "Take Off", and 25 influential Hollywood buyers, including Circle of Confusion that produced the Hollywood movie, "The Matrix".

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) plan to provide one-on-one business matching opportunities to the participating local companies, thereby helping them to win overseas project contracts. Also undertaken will be active promotion and networking with local buyers to advertise South Korean CG technology.

Additionally, if a domestic CG company is successful in being chosen for overseas joint production of a movie support will be provided to ensure that it competes without difficulty with global CG competitors from Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Especially, production of the rendering software, which is essential for CG production, will receive a boost of 1.6 billion won.

The participation of domestic CG companies at the AFM is expected to serve as the platform for the entry of Korean companies into the Hollywood CG market valued at around KRW 3 trillion won.
