Korean manhwa comes to Hollywood

As members in the entertainment industry in Hollywood flocked to the exhibition titled"Manhwa 100: Centenary of Korean Comics" held in LA, US the prospect of Korean manhwa's entrance into the US market has been growing.
Hosted by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA, President & CEO: Lee Jae-woong) and the Korea Cultural Center LA (Director: Kim Jae-won) "Manhwa 100: Centenary of Korean Comics" laid a foundation to expand presence of Korean manhwa in the US market.
The opening ceremony was hailed by some 120 representatives in the entertainment industry in Hollywood and Korean content industry.
During the exhibition, manhwa artist Hyung Min-woo, best known for 'Priest' visited LA and held an autograph session and workshop. And he talked about his work which is reborn as a movie by Sony Pictures and his future plans.
"Priest is the first Korean manhwa to be adapted into a film. It has created a lot of buzz", said Stuart Levy, CEO at Tokyo Pop which published 'Priest' in US. "Unlike existing comics-based movies, Artist Hyung will actively participate in the production process".
Mr. Kohki Kanno, Director of the Japan Foundation said "As Korean manhwa is gaining popularity in Japan it is increasingly appealing to the US market". Japan Foundation promoted 'Manga' as a brand around the world.
Stuart Tenzer, Senior Vice President at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment said "We witnessed a boom of Japanese animations and games during the 80's and 90's. As such, there is an increasing number of people who immerse into English version of Korean manhwas and online games". "The day will come soon when Hollywood films and games are made based on Korean manhwas".
"This exhibition served as a chance to promote to visitors as well as members of the US content industry Korean manhwa's history of 100 years and its excellence as a base for adaptation into drama, film, and online game. And merits of Korean manhwa were well represented by this event", said Kim Jim-gyu, General Director at the Strategic Content Division, KOCCA.
