Korean musicals have been gaining popularity overseas, especially in China and Japan, as a result of the rapid growth of the musical industry and outstanding acting skills of the Korean cast.
The musical "Altar Boyz", which is being staged in Daehakno, has soared in popularity for its fit, good-looking actors. Many Japanese viewers are traveling all the way to Korea to see the musical.
Several domestic musicals have advanced to Asia, such as "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"), which will be staged in Beijing in April ahead of the Beijing Olympics. This month, the musical has been staged in Tokyo, Japan as a theater play. In February next year it will be staged in Nagoya.
Soonchunhyang University Professor Won Jong-won says that musicals can be used as a means to remake popular movies or TV dramas and that their popularity abroad has been rising recently.
