Korea's popular robot animation character "Robot Taekwon V" marked its 30th birthday.
As the country's first popular robot, it has received a "robot registration card".
Son Hee-kyung has this story.
It's already been 30 years since Robot Taekwon V, the Korean animated robot hero, debuted in cinemas and won the people's hearts.
Directed by Kim Chung-gi, a popular animated film of the same title was released in 1976 becoming a big hit.
The film's popularity led to several sequels until the 1990s.
In 2005, the film received full digital restoration treatment as well.
Now to celebrate the robot's 30th birthday, a special event was held in Seoul on Monday.
Taekwon V became the first robot in Korea to receive a "robot registration card".
The Ministry of Commerce Industry and Energy said it decided to present the card to the robot in recognition of its contribution to popularizing robots.
Currently, works are underway to make a new prototype of the 56 meter tall robot with state-of-the-art technology.
Ministry officials say although Robot Taekwon V is an imaginary character from an animated film, it has become a stepping stone to promoting Korea's robot science which has made huge strides in the industry.
Last year, the size of the domestic robot market stood at 500 million U.S. dollars, but analysts say the figure is expected to surge to 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2010.
