More Korean Entertainers Gain Prominence in Hollywood
Published on | Source
Korean actress Kim Yunjin appeared on the ABC television talk show "The View" last Friday as the program's celebrity guest host.
Kim has become a popular face among American fans on a hit TV series called "Lost" that depicts the struggles and relationships of 48 plane-crash survivors on a Pacific island. In "Lost", Kim plays a Korean woman named "Sun" whose traditions, values and language are foreign, thus causes much to get lost in the translation.
She's not the only Korean entertainer winning the hearts of U.S. audiences. Margaret Cho, a self-described "Korean-American girl comic and trash talker", has gained popularity since the 1990s with her compulsive entertaining approach.
Over in Canada, one of the country's most-respected actresses, Sandra Oh has starred in many internationally acclaimed films. She is also viewed as one of Canada's most-talented performers to make their presence felt in Hollywood, as she now stars on ABC's hit medical series, "ER".
Observers in the Korean entertainment field say it's a positive sign to see more actors and actresses with Korean heritage to go into mainstream entertainment business overseas, as it can boost the national image internationally.
