Major networks are gearing up for the new year with interesting documentaries touching on historic events and current issues.
The year 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Japan's annexation of Korea, the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, the 50th anniversary of the 4/19 Student Movement and the 10th anniversary of the inter-Korean Summit. Networks MBC, KBS and SBS are preparing to captivate fans with documentaries shedding light on these historical events.
KBS is bringing "Our 50 Years, Korea's 50 Years", featuring the 4/19 Movement and the people involved with it. The program will search for those who participated and listen to their stories, and also provide historical context for younger viewers.
The four-episode documentary "Sovereignty Lost, The Question We Ask Ourselves" will examine the issue of the annexation treaty that was signed in 1910.
The two Koreas technically stand at war and in order to remind us of this and prepare for the future, KBS is making shows that will focus on unification. Stay tuned for "War and Peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Japan" and see what we can learn from historical precedent through "The 20 Years of Germany's Unification". Watch the historic moment of former President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il shaking hands through the documentary "10 Years After the Inter-Korean Summit".
MBC will produce a television series that focuses on the life and achievements of independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun and also a series that will shed new light on the Korean War. SBS is introducing various shows under the theme "2010 History Production Project", including the documentary drama "6/25 in a New Light: The Big Battle" and documentaries "4/19, An Unfinished Movement" and "The Collapse of an Empire".
Meanwhile, the three networks will also produce shows that will raise public awareness regarding the environment and also the G20 summit, which will be held in November this year in Seoul. This is the first time for an Asian country to host the event.
KBS is producing five documentaries about the environment including "The Last Legacy of the Green Earth" and "Exploration of Life in East Asia: The Amur River". The networks will also introduce green technology to viewers through their program "Green Earth" and "The Architecture of Animals".
MBC has surprised viewers with its documentary series "Tears of the Amazon", which followed last year's "Tears in the Arctic". The two series are part of the "Tears in the Earth" project, and this year fans will get to watch the final installment, "Tears in the Antarctic".
SBS is lining up a three-episode documentary project about the Tundra, and also the life and restoration of Asiatic Black bears in the Mt. Jiri region.
Each of the three networks will also offer programs about the G20 Summit, such as MBC's "Republic of Korea: Running to the Future" and SBS' "2010 Republic of Korea: Top Nation".
The schedules for these programs have not been confirmed yet.
