Novelist Han Kang Wins Man Booker Int'l Prize

Korean writer Hang Kang was awarded the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for her novel "The Vegetarian" during a ceremony in London on Monday.

The novel follows the story of a woman who decides to stop eating meat due to a traumatic experience in her childhood, and believes she is turning into a tree.

The Man Booker Prize of Britain is considered one of the world's most prestigious awards in literature, together with the Nobel Prize in Literature and the French Goncourt Prize.

The book was translated by British translator Deborah Smith. The writer and the translator of the winning entry will share the prize of 50,000 pounds equally.

Han beat literary stars including Chinese author Yan Lianke, a former recipient of the Franz Kafka Prize, Italian writer Elena Ferrante and Turkish Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk.

"The Vegetarian" was adapated for the screen with the movie "Vegetarian".
