Popera Star Lim Hyung-joo to Start Military Service Next Month

Operatic pop, or popera, tenor Lim Hyung-joo will start his 21-month mandatory military service next month.

Lim will enter boot camp in Paju, Gyeonggi Province on March 13, his agency DGNcom said on Thursday.

Lim was just 12 when he released his debut album, "Whispers of Hope", in 1998. His first solo concert, at New York's Carnegie Hall in 2003, brought him international recognition and was followed by performances at prestigious venues in Britain, France, Germany and elsewhere.

"Celebrating my 20th anniversary while in the military next year will give the occasion special meaning", Lim said. "I'm worried about my physical strength, as I'm in my 30s now, but I will do my best", he added.
