Robot Taekwon V: 30 years of memory
Published on | Source
The Robot Taekwon V will soon celebrate its 30th anniversary. It has been forgotten by people, so much so that the original film was discovered in a pile of dirt after it was believed to have been lost. The film then went through a two-year digital restoration process before it was reintroduced to the public.
The MBC special program 'Taekwon V Takes Flight', which is scheduled to be broadcast on Oct. 1 at 11:30 p.m., will show how and why Taekwon V, Korea's representative robot animation character, disappeared. In addition, it will examine what impact this animation had on its era 30 years ago.
The production team tells stories of various people: a scientist who saw Taekwon V and grew up to become a robot engineer, a Taekwondo master who began learning martial arts after falling in love with Taekwon V, and a fan who travelled nationwide to collect data related to Taekwon V.
In addition, the program shows an interview with the three sons of Choi, Chang-Kwon, composer of the theme song of Taekwon V. The second son, singer Choi, Ho-Seop, is known for his popular K-pop song, As the Times Go By. The third son, Choi, Kwi-Seop, a musical director, plans to create a musical about Taekwon V.
The program then compares Taekwon V and Mazinger Z, a Japanese robot animation character who is a rival of Taekwon V, and shows what the Japanese are doing to revive the character. Later, the program sheds some light on what is necessary to revive Taekwon V as a representative Korean cultural icon.
"Japan even made a model and experimented on whether or not the rocket fists of Mazinger Z can actually be launched like the animation depicted, and a company offered to make an underground fortress just like in the animation", said Im, Nam-Hee, producer of the program. "While reporting the 30 years of Taekwon V, I felt again that such cultural content is a good link between the current and future generations".
