Tablo bashing abating

By Park Si-soo

A cyber dispute over the validity of Tablo's Stanford University diploma shows signs of letting up, after police confirmed last week that his bachelor's and master's degrees from the prestigious U.S. school were genuine. Tablo is the leader of Korean hip hop band Epik High.

"Sangjinse", one of the two online cafes that led campaigns to question Tablo's diploma, said Tuesday it withdrew a complaint filed with the police against the singer.

At the same time, Whatbecomes, the penname for a 57-year-old Korean-American who ran the online cafeknown as "Tajinyo" in Korean, posted a message that he will no longer work as the manager of the Tablo-bashing website Tuesday.

Whatbecomes called himself a "loser" and said Tablo will be able to live happily as the police confirmed his degrees. He asked Tablo to drop the suits against 22 netizens.

Their response came days after the police announced the outcome of its investigation into the case surrounding the 30-year-old musician by checking through multiple sources in Korea and the U.S. It started an investigation into 22 key bloggers, including Whatbecomes, over libelous charges filed by Tablo.

With its leader, Whatbecomes, apparently retreating from attacks on Tablo, other members of Tajinyo — the home to countless articles and digitalized documents that had cast doubt on Tablo's graduation from Stanford — appear to have lost steam.

Articles showing remorse for the campaign were frequently spotted. Some called for disbandment of the website as a gesture of an apology to the victim.

Yet, articles pointing out "loopholes" in the police confirmation process still outnumbered the ones of regret.

In an article posted Tuesday morning with the headline of "Cheer up", its author, nicknamed superausguy, said, "It seems that the website became less active following the police announcement and ensuing probe. It's uncertain how much I can contribute to bringing it back to normal. But one thing clear is that I trust our members and will keep working to find the truth to the end".

Some even raised questions over the police announcement itself. Another author, nicknamed jdhooni, said, "Let's restart from the beginning".

Psychologist Kwak Keu-joo at Seoul National University said the dispute was caused by "jealousy" of those who tried to find fault with a person superior to them in all respects.

The dispute sparked in November last year by a small group of bloggers skeptical of Tablo's academic achievements of earning a bachelor and a master's degree in English from Stanford from Sept. 1998 to June 2002.
