The National Tax Service is investigating 21 nightclubs nationwide on suspicion of tax dodging.

The probe follows a scandal involving some of K-pop's leading lights and the hangouts they either owned or frequented, including the now defunct Burning Sun run by Big Bang's Seungri.

"We have initiated simultaneous tax probes into 21 establishments under suspicion of forging business documents and engaging in bogus credit card transactions in order to evade taxes", the NTS said Friday.

It said many high-priced bars, nightclubs and gigolo clubs list people other than the actual owners as proprietors and habitually miss tax payments, while using credit-card readers registered to other businesses to report lower revenues.

An NTS official said, "In light of public sentiment over such nightlife establishments after the K-pop scandal, we plan to launch a thorough probe".
