Opening Thursday, May 13 across Korea, Cannes competition entry "The Housemaid - 2010" took the top position at the Korean box office, grossing a total of US $5.4 million during its opening run to Sunday. The film brought in 815,111 admissions nationwide in its four-day start and became the year's biggest first day opening thus far with some 170,000 tickets sold.
Directed by Korea's provocateur of sexual politics Im Sang-soo, the film stars actress Jeon Do-yeon in the title role of a housemaid drawn into an impetuous sexual affair with the master of an affluent household, leading to jealousy, family politics and revenge. The film is a loose remake of the 1960 classic of the same title "The Housemaid - 1960", directed by Kim Ki-young, and marks the 50th anniversary of the original.
Actress JEON took the Cannes Best Actress prize in 2007 for Lee Chang-dong's "Secret Sunshine". Her new film competes at Cannes alongside LEE's latest "Poetry", which also opened locally May 13 and took 7th place through Sunday. "The Housemaid - 2010" is distributed in South Korea by Sidus FNH and is produced by Mirovision which will also handle international sales.
