The Cannes Film Festival proudly flashed its global credentials Wednesday as it lifted the curtain on its 60th edition with stars, screenings and lavish parties.
Also two Korean movies are poised to compete in the main event this year.
"Secret Sunshine" by Lee Chang-dong will shown on May 24th, and "Breath" by Kim Ki-duk on May 26th.
"Secret Sunshine" is about a widow who strikes up an unlikely relationship with a man after she moves to a remote village with her son.
"Breath" is about how a sculptor trapped in a dull marriage finds herself becoming obsessed with a death-row inmate.
Korea's industry sources expect the two movies to give a much-needed boost to the Korean movie industry, which some say has been stagnant.
The festival will run for about two weeks.
