President Lee Myung-bak will bestow a posthumous medal on Andre Kim, one of the nation's most popular fashion designers, in recognition of his contribution to the country's fashion industry, Lee's office, Cheong Wa Dae, said Friday.
Kim died Thursday at a Seoul hospital, where he was being treated for pneumonia. He was 75.
The government "has decided to award the medal of Golden Crown Culture to him", Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung told reporters. "Kim was a fashion designer who blended South Korea's unique color and beauty with the West's splendid silhouette, thus publicizing the country's fashion to the world". The medal is the highest one given to those who have contributed to the nation's culture.
Kim was also a vanguard and pioneer of South Korea's fashion industry, she added.
Earlier in the day, the president sent a message of condolences to the family of Kim.
In the message, Lee said he "spread South Korea's culture and arts widely to the world through world-level fashion works and received respect and affection from many people for continued donations and charity".
Lee sent Yim Tae-hee, chief of presidential staff, to an official mourning altar for the designer in Seoul, according to the spokeswoman.
