The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has selected actor-director Yang Ik-june's feature debut "Breathless" to compete in its prestigious competition section. The film will have its international premiere at the fest, following on its world premiere last October at Pusan.
IFFR, which runs Jan. 21 – Feb 1, 2009, is known for unearthing emerging talent in world cinema through its 15 feature competition section. The fest hands out three VPRO Tiger awards, worth EUR 15,000 each, to the winning films. It has thus far announced five of its 15 competition films.
"Breathless" director YANG both wrote the screenplay and took the lead role in this film about a tough and course-tongued gangster's relationship with a precocious school girl. The HD feature received funding from Pusan's Asian Cinema Fund.
This year's Tiger jury includes PARK Ki-yong, head of KOFIC's Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) and director of the features "Motel Cactus" (1997) and "Camel(s)" (2001).
