They performed on a stage for "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020", which was broadcast live into the square.
According to the New York City Police Department, some 1.5 million people flocked to the venue, and as the band took the stage with the hits "Make It Right" and "Boy with Luv", fans waved light sticks and sang along.
BTS are the second K-pop act to perform live in Times' Square after rapper PSY sang "Gangnam Style" there in 2012.
Other featured musicians included Post Malone, Sam Hunt and Alanis Morissette.
