[HanCinema's News] "Hijack 1971" Hits Third Place on South Korean Box Office This Year
By William Schwartz | Published on
According to figures recently released by the Korean Film Council, "Hijack 1971" is now the fourth highest performing South Korean film this year just behind "Escape". The historical action film purportedly achieved this benchmark at 1:20 PM on July 20th Korean time. At that point, it had 1,713,003 admissions. While this was a respectable number, it falls well short of the first and second place films this year. "The Roundup: Punishment" and "Exhuma" each earned well over ten million admissions.

"Hijack 1971" was released on June 21st, and this is its fifth weekend of availability at the South Korean box office. The aviation themed film stars Ha Jung-woo and Yeo Jin-goo in leading roles as persons of some importance in a real life hijacking that also took place this same year. Recent marketing for the film has involved reactions of the actual people on the plane at that time. There are no plans for an international release of "Hijack 1971" at this time.
