[HanCinema's News] Martials Arts Director Kwon Tae-ho Talks About "Bad and Crazy"

The new tvN drama "Bad and Crazy" launched on tvN this past December 17th with ratings of 4.473%. The crime drama, which airs on the streaming platform iQiyi worldwide, stars Lee Dong-wook as a lazy, corrupt cop confronted with a high level conspiracy. Wi Ha-jun plays the cop's split personality, a crazy man obsessed with justice. The drama has attracted much attention for its intense martial arts choreography, on which martial arts director Kwon Tae-ho recently commented.

Of particular interest is the dramatic rooftop escape scene that closes out the first episode, wherein Lee Dong-wook is forced by his Wi Ha-jun alter ego into rescuing a young officer who has fallen afoul of the conspiracy. According to Kwon Tae-ho, the scene had separate outdoors and indoors set components, with the outdoor scene being much more difficult. In addition to the difficulty of setting up the water fixtures for the rain effects, care had to be taken to insure the safety of those doing the stunts.

Kwon Tae-ho mentioned similar care being put into the motorbike scene in the second episode, where Wi Ha-jun again kidnaps Lee Dong-wook. Purportedly this scene had been planned long before in pre-production, and director Yoo Seon-dong was adamant in confirming safety ahead of shooting. Puportedly the section where the motorbike descends required Lee Dong-wook himself to be on the motorbike. Fortunately, the shooting progressed without injury.

In broader terms, Kwon Tae-ho also noted the importance of getting Lee Dong-wook and Wi Ha-jun to move as a single unit. This is true both literally and metaphorically- they are on-set together and also are supposed to be playing the same person. Kwon Tae-ho said that the frequency of action scenes in "Bad and Crazy" is much like the title implies, and expressed hope that viewers would watch the show themselves to see.
