Initially, "Mr. Plankton" was not widely watched on Netflix. The romantic comedy premiered on November 8th but did not crack the streaming giants leaderboard in its first week, meaning that it had less than 13 million hours viewed in its first three days. However, "Mr. Plankton" had significant improvement from November 11th to November 17th. With 33.3 million hours viewed, was the 5th most popular non-English TV program on Netflix, and the sixth most popular if English TV programs are included.

The only other South Korean drama to appear in the TV leaderboard this week was "A Virtuous Business" in fifth place with 13.3 million views. The official Netflix rankings divide hours by runtime to assign numerical positions. By this standard, "Mr. Plankton" and "A Virtuous Business" were actually fifth and seventh place respectively. "Mr. Plankton" is also, according to FlixPatrol, the most popular Netflix TV show overall in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam as of this writing.
