[HanCinema's News] "Semantic Error" Sets Record for Boys Love Drama

March 10th saw the premiere of the final episode of "Semantic Error" on the Watcha streaming service. The Boys Love web-drama, which had aired on Wednesdays and Thursdays ever since February 16th, is based on the webtoon of the same title, starring Park Seo-ham and Park Jae-chan in the leading roles as polar opposite students. "Semantic Error" has also been a huge hit for Watcha, being the number one show on the platform for three weeks.

While the Boys Love subgenre may not be especially mainstream, "Semantic Error" has been a noteworthy success in terms of synergy. Not only has the web-drama done well, but the original webtoon as well the web-novel version have experienced huge boosts in sales while the drama version was new. The web-novel saw sales up 576% during its simultaneous promotional event, while revenue for the webtoon went up by 312%.
"Semantic Error" is also noteworthy in that the webtoon and web-novel versions of the story are ongoing, and deal with the continued romance of the leads. The "Semantic Error" web-drama, by contrast, only deals with the beginning of their relationship. So fans of the show are now likely to continue in other formats. There's currently no word on a possible second season of the drama, though the possibility likely can't be ruled out given what an unexpected success the show was.
