[HanCinema's News] South Korean Film Companies See Boost in Stock Prices Over May Success

After two years of difficulties with the South Korean film industry, CJ ENM has had a good month. Buoyed by the strong success of "The Roundup" in the South Korean box office, CJ ENM reported a 5.13% boost to its stock price on the KOSDAQ on May 31st. The stock price now stands at 118,900 won, or around a hundred dollars per share. The fortunes of CJ ENM may also have been improved by a strong showing at the Cannes Film Festival, with both "Broker" and "Decision to Leave" being honored there.

Elsewhere, Content Tree Joongang is up 3.14% to 49,300 won while NEW is up 2.49% to 9,040 won per share. Not all companies adjacent to the South Korean film industry are enjoying improved earnings, as CJ CGV is down 1.25% to 27,650 won per share and Showbox is down .16% to 6,090 won per share. Investor decisions on film markets are often highly speculative, and has little to do with which companies produce and distribute which movies.
