[HanCinema's News] Studio Dragon Stock Price Holds Steady Following Release of "Juvenile Justice"

The Kim Hye-soo led legal drama "Juvenile Justice" has been well-received critically by fans of South Korean media. But the show's comparably weak performance in terms of viewing metrics has underperformed high hopes after Studio Dragon's big bump in stock value over the month of February. While Studio Dragon has been up 12.38% since January 28th, it's actually down .12% since February 28th, with its highest point being 87,500 on February 21st, compared to 85,300 now.

The stock value of South Korean production companies depends greatly on foreign investors who are often left guessing as to which dramas will be popular. The mountaineering show "Jirisan" from 2021 was seen as a likely victory for Studio Dragon, but greatly underperformed expectations. Yet strangely, the more successful "Sweet Home" from 2020 also had little effect on earnings. The hype of a new show existing tends to have more of an effect on stock price than the show's actual performance.

The exact timing of the recent run on Studio Dragon stock by foreign investors may also be coincidental in regards to the premiere of "Juvenile Justice" on February 25th. The popularity of streaming platforms has made production companies for scripted dramas a hot commodity for stock traders, regardless of what might actually currently be under production. "Juvenile Justice" itself is not widely known to be a Studio Dragon project in English language press as it it seen as a Netflix production.

More recent Studio Dragon dramas that might or might not have inspired this recent run on Studio Dragon stock are the recently completed supernatural medical drama "Ghost Doctor" on iQiyi and the nostalgic romance "Twenty Five Twenty One" on Netflix. "Our Blues" and "Little Women" are two other noteworthy upcoming projects for the studio. International streaming sales of the latter two dramas will, if nothing else, have further likely impact on Studio Dragon's stock price.
