[HanCinema's News] "The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure" Passes Million Viewer Mark
By William Schwartz | Published on
The buccaneer themed action historical film "The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure" has become the first domestic South Korean film of the year to pass the million viewer mark at the South Korean box office. The milestone was achieved at exactly 2:50 PM on Saturday February 5th Korean time. "The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure" had been available at the South Korean box office for ten days at that time, having originally been released this past January 26th.

While "The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure" may have beaten "Kingmaker" for the Lunar New Year weekend competition, its numbers are quite far beyond that of Lunar New Year weekend in previous years, suggesting an ongoing COVID-19 induced slump at South Korean theaters. Spider-Man: No Way Home earning over seven million admissions over its run, however, is more difficult to explain with this backdrop. The domestic South Korean film industry is still far off from a full recovery.
