The first episode gets straight to business, giving us a thorough background for Kim Hee-woo, his motivations, and his goals. Then it brings us the catch - Hee-woo is killed and goes back in time to re-live the last few years of his life and change it all. What's more is that it ends on the perfect note to make viewers curious about episode 2. Now, that's what a good first episode looks like.

Given the scale of this narrative, the first episode does an excellent job of summarizing the situation at hand and plunging right into the action. So, "Alchemy of Souls" begins in medias res, just like any epic, and we take it from there. Needless to say, the drama's success speaks for itself.
