Recently, Kim Dong-wook, Kim Sung-kyu, and Chae Jung-an recently had a photo shoot for the April issue of ELLE. The filming focused on capturing the dark yet tense mood of the drama.
Interviews were conducted after the photo shoot. Kim Dong-wook plays Hwang Kyeong-min, who becomes a monster due to past violent trauma. When asked how he played the complex emotion of being both a victim and a perpetrator, Kim Dong-wook said, "It is true that it was difficult because there was a painful narrative even though the character could not give justification to the behavior. Please focus on the choices and actions of adult Kyeong-min and focus on genre fun".
Kim Sung-kyu, who played the role of detective Jeong Jong-seok, Hwang Kyeong-min's past alumni, talked about his own way of approaching difficult characters, "I try to expand the category of things that can be seen and felt in reality. Even if I have never been in a situation of actual violence, I can imagine a situation where I press the other person because I don't want to look weak". Chae Jung-an plays the role of Kang Jin-ah, a character that does not exist in director Yeon Sang-ho's original animation. Chae Jung-an said, "I am a subjective and sincere veteran detective. Viewers will be able to immerse themselves in the process of changing their relationship with fellow detective Jong-seok. I tried to look like a realistic detective who would be on the scene", she said, expressing her expectations.
On the other hand, when asked where he finds hope in reality, Kim Dong-wook said, "I always gain strength and comfort from my family. It is a part that does not change no matter what world comes to", he said, expressing his affection for his family. ""The King of Pigs" is a dark story, but it is a work that shows that it is never happiness or comfort to end something that has begun with violence in the same way. I hope those who have seen the work will think a little more about where to go and have courage".
Kim Sung-kyu said, "I find hope from small things. Not long ago, the sun was creeping into my house, and I felt special. I become optimistic when I feel the fact that it flows naturally", he replied, expressing gratitude for his daily life. Chae Jung-an also said, "The fact that we live in a world where order and law exist to some extent is evidence of optimism. I think people will eventually choose justice if they think about what is right and put strength in the voices of people who make healthy sounds one step ahead".
The 12-episode "The King of Pigs" will be released on the 18th.
Photoshoots and interviews of Kim Dong-wook, Kim Sung-kyu, and Chae Jung-an can be found in the April issue of ELLE, ELLE website, and ELLE YouTube.
