Synopsis
The six miners of Team A at the Jangseong Coal Mine, who work in the coal mine, share life and death in the mine. They entered the mine for only three years, but have been mining for anywhere from 20 to 40 years. Each accident has forced them to consider leaving, but only after the mine closed. Meanwhile, some remember the self-immolation of Seong Wan-hee, a coal miner in Gangwon Province, 35 years ago.
The young men in their 20s who fought for miners' human rights are now approaching 60. Ryu Tae-ho, who is running for reelection as mayor of Taebaek; Jeon Mi-yeong, who runs a butcher shop, and her husband, Cheon Sam-yong, a former miner; Won Ki-joon, director of the Coal Mining Research Institute; Ahn Jae-seong, who failed to answer Seong Wan-hee's final call; and the last image of the old miner who collapsed in the coal mine village, all of these people remain in the shadow of the mine.
Lee Yeon-bok, who left Taebaek long ago, still cherishes his eight years as a miner. The five friends who were present at the scene of Seong Wan-hee's self-immolation have all scattered across the country, and their whereabouts are unknown. However, they parted ways, promising to live conscientiously, wherever and however they lived. Some, driven by a sense of responsibility, sought work, others hid out of guilt, and others were erased from everyone's memory. Someday, the five hope to reunite and visit their friend's grave, but there's no way to find them. Will these people, who gathered and scattered in Taebaek, a place on the brink of mine closure, ever be reunited?
