Synopsis
Explaining San San Jo Gak is rather complicated. It may be quicker and more accurate to hear Chang Kiha's own explanation of the film and album production process: "First, I looked into my heart and wrote a poem. Starting from that poem, a silent film was produced. Then, by layering music onto that silent film, I created a full-length album with nine tracks." Ultimately, the original form of the film was developed into a silent film by the directing team mogeosu from Chang's poem. The version for the JEONJU International Film Festival has since taken on its current shape with music composed by Chang in response to the film layered on top. Chang further explains, "Until the final cut of the film was completed, I made absolutely no plans for the music. And once I began composing, not a single frame of that edit was changed. In this way, we completed an album and a film that share the exact same running time as a pair." This strange, experimental, and almost unbelievable work—or perhaps work in progress—was largely shot indoors. As noted in the synopsis, Chang plays dual roles: White Kiha and Black Kiha. Also, a cute character named Pillow Monster appears. At first glance, White Kiha seems like the reality while Black Kiha feels like a mirror reflection, but of course, the opposite could be true—or perhaps neither is. In any case, the two Kihas bicker and clash constantly, and at one point, Pillow Monster by White Kiha's side crosses over the mirror to Black Kiha. The songs flowing over these visuals—such as "San San Jo Gak (meaning shattered into pieces)," "Absolute Nonsense," and "What If I’m the Only One?"—feel unmistakably like Chang Kiha's familiar style, yet with a layer of experimentation added. Meanwhile, the directing team mogeosu, who transformed Chang's poem into a silent film, is a two-person collective consisting of Yoon Sang Woon and Hwang Inseong. The duo is active across a wide range of formats, including film, music videos, and documentaries.
