Korean Movie | 2023

여공의 밤 | yeo-gong-eui bam

Documentary

Directed by Kim Geon-hee (김건희)

99min | Release date in South Korea:

Synopsis
"The Night of the Factory Girls" begins with contemplations on what existed in the past but have disappeared or left untold and forgotten in the present, reluctantly starting with Shimizu Hiroshi’s "Keijo" because the first Korean documentary "The Panoramic View of the Whole City of Kyeongsung" has been lost. Director Kim Geon-hee believes that a story that isn’t told at a proper time is considered pure fiction in another era, just like the story of the girls who were forcibly brought to work at textile factories in Yeongdeungpo during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea. Their existence has never been spoken of until now. The film listens to their stories and further expands into the evolution of Yeongdeungpo. With abundant archival materials, aphoristic subtitles that replace voiceover, and restrained shots with auteurial colors, "The Night of the Factory Girls" solidly and calmly captures the memories and traces of 100 years.
