It is the first Korean film to receive an award from the British Academy. The film was inspired by the British novel "Fingersmith".

The erotic thriller was highly acclaimed when it was screened at the official competition section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. In the same year, the film won the best foreign picture and best production design awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
