Scant Showing for Korean Films at Box Office

The market share of Korean films in January was a disappointing 45.6 percent, according to the Korean Film Council.

The number of viewers of Korean films was 7.63 million, and ticket sales were worth W60 billion, down 45.6 percent and 45.5 percent from a year ago (US$1=W1,235).

Foreign films drew 9.26 million and produced sales of W72.5 billion, up 9.5 percent on-year on both counts.

Still, the biggest hit was a Korean film, "The Himalayas", which lured 2.59 million spectators in January alone.

The runner-up was R-rated crime flick "Inside Men" with 1.89 million viewers. "The Revenant" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and a CGI bear came third with 1.88 million, and "Kung Fu Panda 3", with an animated bear, was fourth with 1.6 million.

3D animation "The Good Dinosaur", without bears, ranked fifth with 1.32 million. Among the top 10 films, four were Korean, five were American, and one was British.
