According to News 1 on the 28th, a Netflix official said, "We are confirming the facts about the situation at the time", regarding the alleged abuse of power by the original drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines".
"Netflix continues to work with our Korean production partners to create a better production environment", he said. "We will carefully review the confirmed content to prevent similar cases from happening again".
The alleged abuse of power in "When Life Gives You Tangerines" began when a netizen revealed the abuse by staff members on the site of "When Life Gives You Tangerines" on X (formerly Twitter). When filming the drama, the netizen said it was common for the filming team to damage props, citing the scene of "When Life Gives You Tangerines" he experienced.
The netizen said, "When they got caught stenciling with a hardware store locker spray on a borrowed bus, the person who did it shamelessly said they will erase it with paint thinner", citing the black lacquer on the bus headlights and the issue of non-payment of excess allowances at the site of "When Life Gives You Tangerines".
When this became an issue, another netizen also revealed, "I went as a mechanic and drove for them because they were short of people, but all they did was yell and swear at me and didn't even pay me", and added, "They tried to cut our fee, pay less, and not to even mention our over-time".
The netizen said, "We filmed in Jeonju, Beolgyo, and Andong for three consecutive days, and they said they would shoot on different buses, and they gave us burgers and coke for dinner without paying for the accommodation", adding, "There was no waiting room, so I trembled outside for hours in sub-zero weather".
There was also a revelation that "When Life Gives You Tangerines" forced the performers to get a compulsory haircut, and that the production team tried to save money in the process. The Internet user, who revealed the information, claimed, "They left even the elderly cast members unattended in the cold winter and starved, they didn't provide them with a tea table or a food truck, and told everyone to go to some random restaurant and told them to eat within 30 minutes". He added, "That winter, the costume team didn't even allow us to wear undergarments because the fit would be ruined. We were treated like slaves".
As the controversy grew, and such revelations continued, Netflix also expressed its intention to identify the situation and express its position. "When Life Gives You Tangerines" is a drama that unravels the adventurous life of Ae-soon (Lee Ji-eun, Moon So-ri) and Kwan-sik (Park Bo-gum, Park Hae-joon), who were born in Jeju, in all four seasons, and has gained huge popularity worldwide since its release in March.
